For independent authors, writing the book is only half the challenge. The hardest part can be helping the right readers discover it.
But now self-published authors in New Zealand have affordable marketing options to help get their books noticed.
A new partnership between Jodie Beach of First Applause and Lesley Webb of Indie Books has been developed, with the shared goal of increasing visibility for local independent authors and their books.
“Lesley and I noticed how difficult it is for indie authors to market their work,” Jodie said. “So we decided to join forces and help homegrown creatives get their books found in the most affordable, authentic and collaborative ways possible.”
Indie Books is an online directory featuring more than 200 self-published New Zealand authors. It provides a dedicated space to showcase new books from the diverse and talented community of Kiwi writers.
“I have been so impressed at the lengths independent authors go to to produce professional, marketable books,” Lesley said. “Indie Books brings these books together in one place, providing another marketing opportunity for authors doing it themselves.”
Meanwhile, First Applause offers professionally written feature articles about authors and their books. Every article begins with a short Q&A with the author via email, then the editorial is published on First Applause and Indie Books.
What sets First Applause apart is that authors also receive a copy of the article to republish on their website, newsletter and other platforms as they see fit.
“The aim is for New Zealand creatives to have professionally written content that showcases their hard work and talent,” Jodie said. “Self-published authors might have a small marketing budget or a small following, but I don’t think that should mean they have to miss out on great promotional content.”
Together, the team’s complementary services provide affordable marketing opportunities for self-published authors.
“I’m excited to bring more depth to the Indie Books website with Jodie’s editorial pieces,” Lesley said. “Sharing the story behind the book is a great way for authors to add context, authenticity, and build a connection with readers and buyers.”
